“Everybody understands love. Everybody understands family.” Beauty and the Beast comes to Austin!

1.7833

Friends, you already know that Beauty and the Beast is my favorite Disney movie brought to life. I absolutely adore the message in it and the kind of princess that Belle represents. You can imagine my glee over Broadway Across America bringing the musical, Beauty and the Beast, to Austin then! The performance runs October 7-12, 2014 at Bass Concert Hall. I have had the pleasure of seeing Beauty and the Beast on Broadway. It remains the best performance of all time that I have seen live.

2.179026

In case you haven’t been indoctrinated into all things magical, the musical is based on fairytale of Beauty and the Beast. The Beast is actually a prince that has had a spell cast upon him. He will remain a Beast unless he can learn to love and be loved. His castle is full of servants who have been transformed into household objects, my personal favorite is Lumiere, the lively candlestick holder.

1.161480

Belle softens his heart and a friendship emerges. If you haven’t seen the famous Disney movie from the early 90s or read the story, I won’t ruin the outcome for you. Belle is a great daughter and loves her father as much as she loves her books. This makes her so different than a lot of the Disney princesses. There’s naturally a villian, Gaston who wants to marry Belle.

The imagery and costumes made the production on Broadway. I am looking forward to seeing how they have updated these for this production. Here’s a sneak peak video from behind the scenes for you. It is mentioned that they added a few completely new choreographed numbers to the show. There will be some of the favorite songs from the movie as well incorporated into the production.

The show, directed by Rob Roth, stars Jillian Butterfield as Belle, Ryan Everett Wood as the Beast, Cameron Bond as Gaston, Patrick Pevehouse as Lumiere, Emily Jewell as Mrs. Potts and Samuel Shurtleff as Cogsworth.

I have yet to see anything less than an incredible performance at Bass by Broadway Across America. Best part of this particular show is that it is intended to be a show for all ages! There are several weekend day time performances for your early to bed children. And for those of you with older children or children who have later bed times the week day performances have incredible seats available! I am eager to share this performance with my children. The Beauty and the Beast portion was their favorite from Disney On Ice and meeting Belle is always a must do on our trips to Disney!

Beauty and the Beast opens at Bass October 7 and runs through October 12. You can purchase your tickets here.

Go ahead and also mark your calendars for production of Annie, April 21-26th which will surely be a family favorite for you as well!

Be sure to share with me what your favorite part of the production is as I will be doing a recap next week after we see the show live and I would love to include your thoughts! And don’t mind me while I continue to sing “Certain as the sun, rising in the east, tale as old as time, song as old as rhyme, Beauty and the Beast. Tale as old as time, song as old as rhyme, Beauty and the Beast.

Be Intentional

IMG_7786

BE INTENTIONAL. Be Intentional, be intentional. This was the underlying message I took away from the Disney Social Media Moms’ Disney On the Road event. All of the take aways come back to this mantra. Shout it from the rooftops and whisper all throughout your day. This was a part of all of my yearly goals so this was perfect timing for a mid year boost. I was one of the bloggers chosen to attend Disney On The Road in Phoenix. This was my first Disney Social Media Moms Celebration and I was more than blown away. I could write pages on what I learned and the official event was just a half day. I want to share the lessons I took away from the event, all of which will propel this blog even further and I know you will learn something too.

#Disneyland60

1) Play with your kids, appreciate your family time. Be present for them. Without your personal experiences you don’t really have much to write about. (Disneyland’s Public Relations Director Michele Himmelberg ) She also shared some fun events taking place over the next year with the most exciting one being Disneyland’s 60th birthday celebration! You will definitely want to be watching for the #Disneyland60 hashtag for all the special events!

2) Be authentic, be true to your voice. Write, write, write. Be organized. These words come from someone who I follow religiously, Erin Glover, Disneyland’s Social Media Director. She actually shared how their team collaborates together no matter which entity they are representing. They share across teams and tie in ideas together to best benefit us, the readers. She’s a big believer in a content calendar. Erin’s team utilizes Google Docs to help keep organized as a team. I am still using old fashioned pen and paper but knowing there’s a plan for the coming months is huge. If you do more than just blog and you are sharing across social media networks, it helps to incorporate that into your calendar as well. If you aren’t already subscribed to the Disney Parks Blog, you should be!

3) Be deliberateCapture the unexpected . Wow, Tracey Clark was the star of the show for me. Her mini class on mobile photography could have lasted all day and I would have been mesmerized. I will be taking one of her online classes and I think every person out there can benefit whether you blog or not. I especially loved her philosophy that the best camera you have is the one in your hand. Snap out of snapshot mode. I have especially been working on this since the event. Capture the unexpected. Do it differently. Move your body. Don’t try to move the subjects, YOU move to get that unique viewpoint. Every photo she showed us was taken with her phone. Pretty cool.

4) Elevate the every day. It’s the every day moments you forget, capture those. This is so true. My children are still so young yet I feel like I am already forgetting some of their moments. Tying into that, HP was one of the event sponsors. They provided an unforgettable gift to everyone attending as well as some special giveaways.

This is one of my favorite photos of me and my children. So many memories are captured here. Thank you HP!

This is one of my favorite photos of me and my children. So many memories are captured here. Thank you HP!

5) Use your network. Ask and people will help you connect. Consistently this is how the Huggies MomInspired Grant Recipients overcame obstacles. If you have an idea you want to pursue, you need to enter their grant application here. We heard from Lisa Cash Hanson from Snugg Wugg, Romy Taorima from Psi Bands, and Allyson Phillips from Tilty Cup.

Huggies Moms Panel

6) Share your ideas with people who aren’t your friends. Appreciate their honesty and improve upon the negatives they see. Lisa was especially honest with us about the obstacles you face. I loved that part!

Disney Stamp

7) Spend time with your family. Hmm, sounds like number one. Must be important! Thank them. We were given the opportunity to send our photo from HP to someone special that really makes a difference in our lives.

Mail Box

8) Never burn bridges. Nadine Bubeck shared her story with our group. Above all she learned over and over that the bridges she formed, no matter how old or small, came back to help her in her career.

9) You can learn from anyone if you choose to do so. There will always be someone who has a bigger, better blog. And there will always be someone you can help. Grab that person by the hand and help them. And look for the hand of the person who is reaching out to help you. This was the biggest lesson learned from the other attendees.

Be intentional is what I heard in these messages over and over. Be present, have a plan, be intentional. If you are being intentional in all that you do, you will achieve greatness. That’s not to say your path will be the same you set out to run along. All of these amazing speakers and this event could not have been made possible without Maria Bailey. I have been following her as well for some time. She epitomizes the words BE INTENTIONAL. She lives, breathes, and truly runs the path of intentional living. I doubt she realizes the inspiration she provides for so many women and I am grateful for her.

IMG_7849

I intentionally shared this snack with my sweet boys.

I am honored to have been included in this incredible group of bloggers. I learned just as much from the other attendees as I did the speakers. I am thankful I went out the day before the event and enjoyed a day of recharging. It allowed me some needed mommy down time, some time to really think about what I wanted to take away from this opportunity, and a chance to enjoy the incredible venue, The Fairmont Scottsdale Princess(watch for a separate review of this resort and book it!). I wish I would have planned staying the second night but I at least had a late flight.

For any of you that followed along for the other On The Road events, you know that Mickey Mouse made a guest appearance. Well, we were truly surprised when Grumpy Cat showed up in his place! Every opportunity I have had in the past to meet her has resulted in crazy long waits, longer than Anna and Elsa even!

Grumpy cat

She was so grumpy she decided to sleep through my meet and greet with her!

What questions do you have for me about this event or these takeaways?

Disney On Ice - Rockin Ever After May 21-25, 2014

Have you taken your kids to a Disney on Ice performance? We went for the first time to one last night and it exceeded every expectation I had! We’ve seen Disney Live performances and obviously have been to many shows in the Disney Parks. I definitely expected a certain level of Disney excellence, but this show really went above and beyond! Feld Entertainment did an outstanding job!

We live about 45 minutes from Cedar Park Center where the show was held so we made a family date night out of the evening. You can download directions at that link. We left early to try to avoid the traffic. We failed at that part but it wasn’t too bad. We then took the kids to a nice dinner. They behaved better than I expected so the night was off to a great start! They had no idea what
we were doing after dinner so the anticipation was building. After ruling out that we weren’t going on a Disney Cruise (that was their last #DisneySurprise), they had no idea what they were going to see. We waited to tell them once we were inside the arena and they were so happy! I wish I would have had the camera ready for our two year old’s response. He covered his mouth in surprise!
Here he is in awe of the rink

Getting in and out of the parking area is really a breeze. The parking attendants are organized and the price was really reasonable, $10 for self parking and $15 for valet. We self parked. Gathered up our belongings and headed inside to the security line. It moved very quickly, but uh-oh, we got sent back because we had our camera that had a detachable lens and surprisingly we didn’t have our point and shoot in the camera bag as a back up. Read that again so you don’t make our mistake-NO REMOVABLE LENS CAMERAS ALLOWED. That being said, I apologize now for my quality of photos. I am not as skilled with the iPhone camera.

Once inside we checked out the snack offerings and merchandise tables along with the photo opportunities. The photo opportunities were disappointing. They don’t compare to the Disney Live photos and for anyone who has spent time in the parks, they really were a bit of a let down. You can take your picture with a cardboard cut out of Belle for $15. Or you can spend $20-$24 for a green screen option that shows you standing in front of a variety of backgrounds like a castle, etc. We skipped all of the above. I did get to snap a picture of the backdrop but you are not allowed to take a picture of your own with the kids in it without paying the fee.

The merchandise tables were focused mainly on “girl” toys as my boys would say. A ton of princess options but they did have a couple of swords here and there. Overall, if I were you, I would save my money and buy something from The Disney Store. They did have cute coloring books for only $5 if your child is one that must have a souvenir.

Snowcones were very popular

The regular concession lines are open and plenty of people were having dinner there. Then there were the DISNEY concession lines. Of course that is where our family ended up. I had unknowingly promised them the most expensive cotton candy and popcorn in the world before we had entered the arena. $12 for each in the picture.

The smile was worth the $12!

They were very fresh though so it was all good. The hat comes with the cotton candy. You can also get a crown with Mickey Ears on it too.

One quick aside about the prices of the merch and snacks-I heard more than one person in line say this must be what it is like at the parks. It absolutely is not like that at the Disney Parks. Yes things are a little more there, but overall the merch prices were 30-50% more for similar park items. The snacks were double the price as the parks even when factoring in the cute presentation. So if you have not been to the Disney Parks, please don’t be discouraged by these price points.

Now, on to the show! The Cedar Park Center is a perfect set up. There isn’t a bad seat in the arena so no matter where you purchase tickets, your little ones will enjoy the show. The event staff seemed to have been trained by Disney themselves. Feld Entertainment did an incredible job with the staff. They were helpful, courteous, and had the Disney magic all about them!

A group of Rockin Ice Dancers starts the show off and then Mickey and Minnie Mouse are introduced! Donald and Goofy join them but no Daisy for some reason. Mickey and Goofy were really impressive skaters. Our kids were in awe of them of course.

There was a lot of 80s music represented to get the parents moving and alive. The show had different fairy tales represented and you got a taste of the overall story but not the complete story line. Anastasia and Drizzella were first and they were hysterical. My youngest was a bit concerned for their safety but I told them they were just being silly. Then Pinocchio made an appearance.

Then one of our family favorites came on, The Little Mermaid! Sebastian was one of the most animated characters of them all in the whole show. He gets a standing ovation from me. Ariel and Prince Eric of course have their moment in the spotlight too. Ursula was quite impressive being able to skate at all
given she is a huge sea witch. Ariel did more acrobatic moves than I expected at this show.

Here’s a short clip where you can see Ariel, Prince Eric, and Sebastian. I was not trying to capture every movement just a little peak for you.

After The Little Mermaid, Rapunzel came out. I don’t want to give it all away but you will see a lot of frying pans in this segment but most impressive of this act was Maximus the horse skating on all four legs! The Lanterns were especially beautiful. At about 55 minutes from the start, it was then intermission time. Important to note for potty breaks. The bathroom lines were quick moving. We still had plenty of snacks left so we didn’t even take a look at the snack lines or merchandise lines. The intermission was about 15 minutes long.

Mickey and Minnie came back to introduce the next act. Merida and the cast from Brave were there! Our kids have not seen this movie yet but both were mesmerized. I thought the little brothers were a little creepy but my four year old adored them and waved every time they came skating by. This segment demonstrated a few theatrical “tricks” that left our boys in awe. You will have to see for yourself!

Now, the show stopper-Beauty and the Beast. This was our entire family’s favorite part. I am biased but the rest of them aren’t. This is my favorite Disney movie and fairy tale. The French village was exquisitely recreated. Belle was by far the most talented ice skater of them all. She was elegant and graceful and did more moves than any of the others. Gaston had a few of his own to show off too.

The costumes in this segment were incredible, especially the knives and forks. I was worried about our kids lasting the entire show since it was way past their bedtime but both were not going to move until Belle was finished.

Not letting Pascal go!
Spotlights and my iPhone don’t go well together

There was a finale by the all of the skaters and that is where you realized just how many performers were actually there. The entire cast deserved a standing ovation in my opinion. All of the special effects and lighting enhanced their performance. The set designs were more than I would have expected and perfectly done.

Overall, our entire family gives the show two thumbs up! We are ready to see Frozen next! Are you going to see Disney on Ice in your city? Austinites, do you already have your tickets? If not, don’t worry, there are still some seats left but buy them quickly! They are selling fast. It made for a perfect family date. Your little princesses and princes will love it and you will too! Buy tickets here through Ticketmaster or at the Box Office. Please note the Friday evening performance was cancelled due to a hockey playoff game.
The following show times are available:
Thursday May 22 7:30 PM
Saturday May 24 11:30 AM, 3:30 PM, 7:30PM
Sunday May 25 1:30 PM and 5:30 PM
Couple of tips for your outing:
  • Bring a point and shoot camera or hope you are more skilled at iPhone photography than I am
  • Bring a sweater for the kids or a light jacket
  • Wear pants, put tights on the little girls-it is cold in the arena for the ice
  • For an evening show, pack PJs for after the show to change into so when they fall asleep you can easily place them in the bed
  • Bring cash for parking
  • NO outside food or drinks are allowed. We brought in an empty sippy cup and filled it up for our little one

And here on the way home you can see how happy and tired they are!
I hope your family has just as much fun as we did making those magical Disney memories!
Ask if you have any questions.

*This review was of my own opinion. I did receive complimentary tickets to provide an honest review for the show.
